Far away, at the very bottom of the ocean, which no anchor can reach and no human eye can see, is the home of marine beings: Dolphins, mermaids, the Sea King, his old mother, and his daughter, the Little Mermaid, whose skin is as clear and smooth as a rose petal, her eyes as blue as the deepest water, and whose greatest pleasure is to listen to stories about the world of humans far above. When the Little Mermaid stands by the window and looks up through the blue darkness, she dreams of a big, noisy city on shore. No one else longs for that world as much as she does. Thus begins the story of the Little Mermaid’s true love for the terrestrial Prince, for whom she sacrifices her most precious gifts – her voice and her life.

The National Theater’s new ballet production, based on Hans Christian Andersen’s famous fairy tale and set to music by the Czech composer Zbyněk Matějů for the National Theatre Orchestra, will be choreographed by Jan Kodet and directed by the acclaimed SKUTR directorial duo (Martin Kukučka and Lukáš Trpišovský). The performance, abounding in poetic dance scenes, is intended not only for parents and children but for everyone who loves this timeless story.
